Back to School Safety Tips: Preventing Auto, Bus & Pedestrian Accidents

|

Whether your child is in kindergarten or college, going back to school means new schedules and new routines. Sometimes back to school comes with new safety challenges. Here are some common back-to-school injuries with some safety tips on how to prevent them:

Auto Accidents

  • Traffic Congestion: School zones and neighborhoods near schools have congestion peaks during the morning drop-off “window” from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and the afternoon dismissal window from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. School areas and bus stops have significant congestion.  Every driver needs to operate their vehicle with caution and adhere to speed limits and be prepared to make frequent or unexpected stops. Be mindful also that school zones have lower time-specific speed limits.
  • Distracted Driving: Do not text or make phone calls while driving. It is illegal in both Virginia and North Carolina to hold and use your cell phone while operating your vehicle.
  • Watch for Children: Children walk to and from school, walk to the bus stop or cross streets to get to their destination. Maintain a safe distance and be prepared to stop.
  • Seat Belts: Make sure all parties in your vehicle have their seat belts on. Children should be in the appropriate car or booster seat until the specific height or weight requirement is met.

Bus Stop Accidents

  • Parental Supervision: Parents should walk children to the bus stop and wait with them until the bus arrives. If the child is old enough to wait by themselves, instruct them where the safe areas are to stand and wait.
  • Before the Bus Arrives: Get to the stop early.  Wait at least 10 feet away from the edge of the road or curb. Do not run, push or play near traffic. Stay visible so on approach the bus driver can see you.
  • Getting On and Off: Wait for the bus to come to complete stop and allow the doors to open. Wait for the drivers signal to enter the bus. Hold on to the handrail when going up the stairs.
  • Stop for Flashing Lights: Always stop when a school bus shows flashing red lights or extends its stop arm.
  • Slow Down for Yellow Lights: Flashing amber overhead lights means the bus is preparing to stop.

Pedestrian Accidents

  • Use Sidewalks: Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available.
  • Crosswalks and Signals: Use designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals. If there is a crossing guard, follow their instructions when crossing the road.
  • Map a Safe Walking Route: If your child walks to school, help them to map a safe route that is specific for their commute to school.
  • Look Both Ways: Teach children to stop, look left, right, and then left again before determining if it is safe to cross the street.

A safe school year does not happen by accident. Safety requires a collective effort from drivers, parents, teachers, and students alike. By staying vigilant, practicing these simple habits daily, and looking out for one another, we can make this academic year both safe and successful. Have a fantastic, safe school year!
